Sulphur

Not the element of that name, but similar-smelling, Sulphur is a crystal rendered from the oily, pitch-black residue left by demonic incursions into Spire. Smoked in glass pipes whose fumes are inhaled, users report a fantastic rush and a skewing of their morality in a sadistic direction. In fact, the greater the amount consumed, the more that carrying out unpleasant or cruel acts feels to the user.

Sulphur is rare and expensive most of the time – if it should suddenly become more readily available or cheaper, it means that demonic incursions have increased in number (usually as a result of some idiot actually summoning demons), and is a reliable indicator that bad times are coming very soon for everyone.

Mushrooms

The drow grow a wide variety of fungi in the Garden district of Spire, and some of them are hallucinogenic. These Mushrooms are nothing like as potent or reliable as the manufactured drugs coming out of Threadneedle Square, but they are cheap (free, if you’re down to pick your own) and widely available, so a wide variety of mystic cults rely on strange-tasting teas brewed out of various kinds of psychoactive (and non-psychoactive – they can be hard to tell apart) Mushrooms to spice up their gatherings.

Malak

A little touch of home that’s illegal in this weird foreign city of Spire, Malak is a mild downer. It is produced by blending two different kinds of algae, each of which has no particular effect on its own and can be grown almost anywhere. Back in the Home Nations of the drow, it is a daily ritual for almost everyone, but the Aelfir overlords of Spire have declared it illegal.

As a result, there is now a thriving underground market for Malak, although because it remains easy to make, it’s still a pretty cheap hit.

Maiden’s Prayer

Served as a kind of herbal tea, Maiden’s Prayer is a popular abortifacient among the humans of Spire. Like most herbal teas, it is made by boiling and steeping plant leaves, although for Maiden’s Prayer the process is repeated several times to increase the strength of the drug.

The exact nature and number of the plant or plants that go into Maiden’s Prayer is a closely guarded secret, and it is possible that different herbalists are using slightly different mixtures. Maiden’s Prayer is occasionally used by non-humans, although never the Drow.

Ivory

Ivory is a very potent hypnotic harvested from the lands far north of Spire. Its name is actually somewhat accurate, as it created by grinding the venomous tusks of vicious narwhal-like amphibians, although accounts vary as whether or not the venom is removed first.

Ivory is a popular drug, although not always a cheap one. Even Mister Alas, drow crime lord and owner of one-third of (appropriately) the Ivory Quarter of Spire, is not always able to afford it, although he takes nothing else if he at all can – and many residents of Spire think that a high good enough to make a crime lord break the rules about getting high on their own supply is at least worth trying once. Maybe twice…

Godsmoke

Godsmoke takes its name from it origin: it is a powder deriving from the fungi that grow around churches and other holy sites in Spite, which is dried out and ground up to make the drug. It can be rolled into cigarettes or packed into a pipe for smoking, as the user prefers.

Godsmoke is not, as far as any knows, actually smoked by gods, but most commonly by the workers in the Gardens and the Works, who rely on its euphoric and pain-dulling effects to self-medicate the injuries that are an all-too-common feature of their jobs.

Glimmer

No one knows where lies the land in which the goddess Demos was first worshiped. Legend says that it was greatly distant from Spire, and lost beneath the desert sands many years ago. But the cult of Demos survived, and its temples can be found along Pilgrim’s Walk in Spire even today. And in these temples, in the deepest recesses of the shrines of Demos, grow the prismatic crystals better known as the drug Glimmer.

Why exactly the goddess chooses to share her love for her cultists in this fashion is unknown, but certainly the strong and fast-hitting high of Glimmer, carrying with it a strong urge to dance, sing and otherwise make merry, hasn’t hurt the recruitment efforts of her priests one whit.

The Dose

The Dose was retroengineered from schematics un-earthed from the blighted Archology of Saltash. Only a thousand or so of these crystalline pills exist within Spire.

Human scientists believe that fore-runners who came before the young races of the world perfected the medication to remove the need for sleep – one pill would rearrange their brains into a different configuration where it was simply no longer required. The human version available today works, but only for a week or so, at which point the effect of the lost sleep starts to catch up with the user – unless they take another pill. Every serious user of the drug in Spire – which is to say, all five or six or them – would die from withdrawal if they missed even a single Dose.

Devilsroot

Devilsroot, sometimes just called Root is a naturally-growing tuber that, when chewed, releases a stimulant. However, the juices of the tuber are very bitter to the taste, so Devilsroot is often brewed into a tea, which is then consumed only after having been sweetened with sugar to cut the bitterness.

The tea is also preferred by some users, especially among the younger Drow, because Devilsroot juice stains the teeth when chewed, making it harder to conceal one’s habit (and also just for reasons of fashion).

Dagger

Technically, Dagger isn’t really a drug – it’s a semi-random gumbo of assorted cheap drugs, all mixed together and sold with deeply suspicious assurances all through the Red Row region of Spire. It’s a powder, usually brownish and crystalline, sold by the pouch and usually taken by snorting in lines.

Given its unpredictable effects and tough-sounding name, it should be no surprise that using Dagger tends to cause as many – if not more – problems than it solves. The morning after, you’ll likely have more bruises and less money. If you’re lucky enough to get off lightly.
