“The Reflex” by Duran Duran

“The reflex is an only child, he’s waiting by the park
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover – isnt that bizarre?
Every little thing the reflex does is an answer with a question mark”

The Reflex should be the gold standard against which all incomprehensible lyrics should be measured. I mean, sure, Tutti Frutti is weird, but a lot of that is down to scat vocals. So that doesn’t really count.

The Reflex, on the other hand, is to metaphors that are merely ‘mixed’ roughly what the cut-up method is to really intense rhyme schemes. It has a sheer lack of coherency and logic that make it the envy of all other songs by would-be arty New Romantic bands.
